ARRL Field Day

ARRL Field Day logoARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada.  Each year over 35,000 amateurs gather with their clubs, friends or simply by themselves to operate.

ARRL Field Day is not a fully adjudicated contest, which explains much of its popularity.  It is a time where many aspects of Amateur Radio come together to highlight our many roles. While some will treat it as a contest, most groups use the opportunity to practice their emergency response capabilities.  It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to local elected community leaders, key individuals with the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For many clubs, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of their annual calendar.

Field Day 2016

Plans are now underway for Field Day 2016. Here are the details so far:

Date:

Field Day 2016 is June 25-26. 1800 UTC Saturday and running through 2059 UTC Sunday.

Setup will start Saturday morning approx 8:00 am

Location: City of Steinbach Emergency Operations Centre, 477 Main St, Steinbach
Parking: DO NOT PARK in the Fire Depratment lot! Arrangements have been made to use the empty gravel lot to the west of the fire hall (across Kroeker Ave). Parking is free, with plenty of space.
Talk-In

VE4MER Repeater will be monitored throughout the weekend and available to help coordinate directions. Frequency 449.725- with CTCSS 127.3

We are still unsure what access control measures will be in place. Visitors will require an escort.

Class: Likely 1F - Meaning a single transmitter operating from an established EOC. Due to limited coax entry it may be difficult to operate more than 1 transmitter
Equipment:

It's uncertain yet, exactly what equipment will be needed. We MUST utilize the EOC equipment during this period, as our annual readiness test. We hope to have 1 x HF 80-10m rig, 2m & 70cm and possibly 6m. Also hoping to activate satelitte station as well.

Modes: SSB, CW, Digital. The majority of HF will be via SSB. Paddles will be available for this wishing CW (would be great throughout the night). Feel free to bring your own key. PSK or RTTY will also be an option.
Operators: We want to ensure ALL amateurs wanting MIC time have an opportunity. This is not meant to be a contest, it's intended to be an exercise of operational readiness. A sign-up form will be available here soon, for 1 hour blocks.
Misc:

Please keep in mind that we are guests of the City, and particularly of the Fire Department. They have been very gracious to offer us the space for this event. A media release will be distributed to local media outlets, and invitations have been sent to local city officials. Enjoy yourself, but be respectful and professional at all times.

There will be a number of volunteers needed to help organize and make this event successful. Here are some of the areas which need to be covered:

  • Public Affairs & Media
  • Technical Coordinator
  • Meals & Refreshments

Previous VE4MEC Field Days

2012 was the first year that our club hosted a field day station of our own. It was a successful inaugural event, with more than 500 contacts made. We plan to make this an annual event, so watch for details of upcoming field day!
